Stover Green Team are incredibly excited to be the proud recipients of the Green Flag Award for the second year in a row, although this time, with Distinction! The Green Flag Award recognises all their hard work last academic year, and the effort they are putting in around the school to raise awareness of environmental and sustainability issues. Among other things, Green Team sponsored a toilet in Malawi, encouraged computer monitors to be switched off at the end of the day by printing reminder stickers, and took a trip to a water treatment plant to learn what happens to our wastewater. We are excited to see what the children decide to do this year!
The Green Flag Award is run by Eco Schools and Keep Britain Tidy. It follows a set format every year and a clear structure for the children to follow to raise awareness of environmental issues and make improvements across our school community. In the Autumn term, children carry out an Environmental Review – identifying issues from a number of areas across the school that could be focused on. As a result, creating an Action Plan comes next – setting targets and making a plan.
To achieve their Award again this year, the children have carried out their Environmental Review of the school and have chosen to focus on three areas to improve: LITTER, MARINE, and ENERGY. They will then carry out a range of tasks to raise awareness and make a difference.
Plans are made and carried out as part of our Green Team activity on a Friday lunchtime. We have a growing group of young people across all age groups that are keen to take action. Already this academic year, the children have met as an Eco Committee and voted in members to lead on particular aspects that they are passionate about. They have carried out a litter audit and are planning to deliver an assembly to the whole school to help raise awareness of how everyone can make a difference to our planet.
We would like to say a massive congratulations to all those that helped throughout last year to gain our Green Flag Award for the second time, and thank you to those that are continuing to work hard to look after our beautiful grounds, and highlight the importance of sustainability and the impact we are having as humans.
