Welcome to Stover School: Boarding

A true home, in the heart of our school family

There’s just one boarding house at Stover, and it’s called home.

The Stover boarding family ebbs and flows during the academic year, with some weekly boarders, the occasional overnight visit and others staying all term – but everyone has a valued place in the house.

Our staff have a wealth of boarding experience and bond quickly with each young person, ensuring they feel safe, nurtured and secure.

Boys and girls sleep on different wings but share living space with at least two members of staff in the boarding house at all times. It’s a smaller size boarding house and each individual has the freedom to be themselves, but are cared for like they’re family.

It might be a a two year stay for A level’s or BTEC courses or a short stay just for a term or you might be joining us for two years of GCSE courses. The boarding house is made up of a mix of these. For a smaller boarding house we have many different nationalities at the same time. There are pupils from Russia, Spain, Ukraine, Germany, and Vietnam as well as other countries. In the past we’ve had pupils from Nigeria, France and Italy to name but a few.

Whatever your story there is a place for you here at Stover! We have decades of experience in boarding school life.

It’s important staff really fulfil the role of surrogate parent so our boarders are on first name terms with our boarding house team. Our Senior Houseparent lives among the children whilst our dedicated safeguarding and mental health houseparent ensures there is always someone to talk to.

Within the house, we encourage a family environment where everyone looks after one another. Older children often read bedtime stories to the younger ones, and we never miss a chance to celebrate birthdays, high days and holidays.

Boarders also get a say in the decision making process, take on house responsibilities and generally feel a part of something special at school.

Boarding is an enriching experience in itself.

Our boarding houses are a global community, with a diverse mix of nationalities. We always celebrate cultural events that are special to each child, and boarders can also request “home dinners” in the style of their favourite food.

On weekends everyone goes out together. We’re just 15 minutes from both the moor and the sea so children enjoy a mix of cultural and tourist trips as well as their own requests. Our 64 acres of parkland is also ideal for special events with camp fires, water slides or games.

Stover boarding is open to all – whether it’s overseas students who stay all term, weekly boarders who live just too far away or simply an ad hoc arrangement for families who need temporary support. As a result, there is no division between day pupils and boarders – everyone becomes part of the school family.

When school is done and dusted there are endless activities and trips for you to enjoy, from coasteering and beach activities to hiking, ten tors, cinema trips and shopping trips to local cities.
